Introduction: Suicide is found to be the cause of death for approximately 800,000 people everyrnyear. Many more people attempt suicide around the world. There is increasing need forrnintervention methods to bring about positive change in these numbers. Suicide hotlines arernavailable all over the world and actively providing services with trained volunteers supported byrnprofessional staff. However, these services have still not been established in Ethiopia. Given thernlatest data reported by WHO shows an increasing number of deaths by suicide in Ethiopia beingrn1.31% of the total deaths, the importance of suicide hotlines among other intervention methods isrnevident. However in a country like Ethiopia, where culture and religion play a significant role inrnthe understanding of mental health and topics like suicide, the study of the perception of peoplerntowards the use of a suicide hotline is essential.rnrnObjective: The aim of this research is to assess the acceptability of a suicide prevention hotlinernin Ethiopia if it were to be developed.rnrnMethods: This qualitative research tried to explore the readiness of people towards using arnsuicide prevention hotline in times of urgent need for intervention. The study was conducted atrnTikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Data was collected from sixrnparticipants with previous history of suicide attempt(s). Semi-structured interviews werernadministered over the phone in the Amharic language. The recorded interviews were transcribedrnverbatim then translated to English. Data analysis was carried out using thematic analysis.rnrnResults: The research found that all of the research participants lacked knowledge in the area ofrnhotlines and suicide hotlines in particular. However after the purpose that suicide hotlines servernwas explained, the majority found it to be very essential and stated that had the option beenrnavailable during the times of their past suicide attempts, they would have been practical. It wasrnalso found that extensive and consistent advertisement of the services the suicide hotline serves isrnconsidered to be important in reaching a wide scale of the public. Emphasis was also made onrnthe significance of trust to be gained from the service providers, be it well-trained volunteers orrnprofessionals in the area. The participants also raised the issue of people’s understanding regarding mental health and receiving care for mental health problems having an impact on therneffectiveness of the suicide hotline.rnrnConclusion: There seems to be a gap in the understanding of the use of suicide hotlines forrninterventional needs that people may have. However given the opportunity that these services arernprovided and the significant findings of this research are addressed, along with furtherrnexploration in the subject, steps could be taken towards developing the hotline in the future.
