Seroprevalence Of Hepatitis C Virus Among Hiv Infected Individuals And Comparison Of Basic Laboratory And Clinical Parameters At Art Clinics Of Tikur Anbessa Specialized And Zewditu Memorial Hospital Addis Ababa Ethiopia
Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is common in Human Immunodeficiency virusrn(HIV)-infected persons as both may have common mode of transmission. HIV and HCV corninfection is a major global health concern. However, data on co-infection are limited in Ethiopia.rnObjective: The aim of this study was to determine sero-prevalence of hepatitis C virus amongrnHIV infected individuals and comparison of basic laboratory and clinical parameters at ARTrnclinics of Tikur Anbessa Specialized and Zewditu Memorial Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.rnMethods: A hospital based cross-sectional survey was carried out on HIV follow up attendees fromrnJuly to November, 2013. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect data onrndemographic information, and risk factors associated with HCV infection and clinical, commonrnhematological ,CD4 T cell count and LFT profiles were also collected using pretested structuredrnchecklists .AntiHCV antibodies was detected using enzyme immunoassay test kit (EIA-ANTI-HCV)rnaccording to manufacturer instruction. We used Epi–Info version 3.5.1 and SPSS version 21rnstatistical package for data entry and analysis.rnResults: All consecutive attendants recruited in the study (n=282), were HIV follow up cases. Therernwere more females 207(73.4%) than males 75 (26.6%). The sero-prevalence of HCV was 5.3%rn(15/282, 95% CI= 3% - 8%). There was no significant difference in HCV seroprevalence with agernand sex (p > 0.05). Hospital admission was found to be a possible risk factor for HCV infectionrn(p
