This thesis focuses on the late medieval mss of Gadla 'Ewtatewos. Thernreason why the researcher selected the topic at hand is that the ms isrnnot well known among the general public and has not been studiedrndeeply by scholars, although it constitutes a rich source of historical,rnreligious and cultural events of the epoch.rnThe study uses a comparative methodology, whereby the three mss, thatrnis ms TG (the ms in Tara Gadam), ms NA (the ms in National Archives)rnand EMML 529 (the ms in rES) , are compared for their similarities andrndifferences.rnChapter one consists of the background of the study, review of relatedrnliterature, statement of the problem, as well as the objective,rnmethodology, scope and s ignificance of the study.rnIn Chapter two, the researcher makes an a nalysis, including a list of thernthree mss of Gadla 'Ewostatewos, a description of the mss of TG, andrnnotes about the hagiographer and about the date of composition of msrnTG.rnChapter three deals with content analysis of the Gadl comprising anrnaccount of historical, political, religious, ideological and cultural eventsrnof the epoch and The historical part gives a wide description of thernbiography of 'Ewos(atewos and notes about his parents andrngrandparents.rnThis chapter a lso includes his teachings concernmg the religiousrnaspect, an account is given of 'Ewostatewos' teachings on the sabbaths,rnthe Trinity, the incarnation and moral issues with regard to socia lrnissu es, 'Ewostatewos expressed opposition to the slave trade andrnpolygamy.rnThe new findings on the Gadl is a lso expressed in this ch apter, such as:rnthe meaning of the name 'Ewostatewos, the hi ~to rical relations betweenrnSudan and Ethiopia, the ideological differences between the house ofrn'Anorewos and the house of 'Ewostatewos.rnChapter Four shows historical, religious and hagiographical problems of Gadlrn'EwostatewosrnIn chapter Five, the researcher engages in a philological analysis basedrnon the two mss (TG and NA). This is concerned especially withrnconjunctive and polygenetic errors and linguistic problems such asrnsyntax, phonology, morphology, gender, number, etc.rnFinally chapter six conclu des in conclusion and recommendations.
