Bottled water manufacturing is now alarmingly flouring in Ethiopia. The sector has been extracting public water with concerns of waste disposal, used thrashed bottles inundating the country and bottled water distribution fossil fuel trucks jamming our cities and villages. The study was conducted to assess the Green Supply Chain Practices (GSCM) in bottled water manufacturing companies (BWMC) in and around Addis Ababa. Three independent factors economic, environmental and social perspective; five dependent variables of GSCM practices-reverse logistics, eco-design, green manufacturing, green purchasing and green distribution were measured using Likert scale. Based on non-probability purposive sampling, questionnaire was filled by one respondent from willing 20 factory. Different level of managers participated in the study who are mainly general, deputy, factory/plant, and operation and production manager. SPSS used for analysis and reliability test for Cranach alpha was found to be >0.738 in aggregate. Validity of the measurement and presence of significant relationship between variables were analyzed using Chi Square non-parametric test, correlation using bivariate analysis Spearman/Pearson independence test. It was found out that 100s of millions of bottles are disposed at the customer end. The practice of GSCM is almost non-existent in concept and practice except with few traditional signs like battery forklifts used because of the regulatory obligation and collection of jar for reuse; otherwise, the sourcing does not take into account environmental friendly like recyclable materials, use of reusable bottles like glasses, paper labels and packaging materials. Production does not consider eco labelling. Excess, demineralized and waste water is disposed to the surrounding drainage or river. Moreover, tens of 100s trucks distribute bottled water to customers using fossil fuel. The companies has collaboration challenges in the sector and with suppliers, regulatory bodies, recyclers and customers. It is also unsure that they are accountability to their nearby community and public at large and many other related issues. Finally, GSCM and its practices are new in the sector. Much broader study and other related issues of reverse logistics, use of recycled materials, waste water management, collaboration with recyclers, strategy and way of distribution of bottled water to customers and minimizing fossil fuel trucks and accountability can be future study interest areas.
