Background: Functional neurologic symptom disorder is one of thernsomatic symptom disorders characterized by different subtypes of rnpresentations. Its prevalence and associated factors vary in between therndeveloped and developing countries including the subtypes too. rn rnStudy objective: To determine the prevalence and associated factors ofrnfunctional neurologic symptom disorder in patients attending psychiatric rnclinic at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. rn rnMethod: A retrospective electronic medical record review was done.rnThe study participants were selected from the registry of the outpatient rnpsychiatric clinic in the duration of Hamle 1/2011 – Hamle 30/2013 E.C.rnData was collected by means of data extraction sheet. The Collected datarnwas entered and analysed using SPSS version 20. A descriptive analysisrnwas conducted. Univariable then multiple logistic regression was done torndetermine the factors associated with FNSD. rn rnResults: In this study, there were a total of 2089 patients seen from therntime of from Hamle 1/2011 – Hamle 30/2013 E.C. From the total seen rnpatients 105 were diagnosed with conversion disorder making itsrnprevalence 5.02% and incidence 2.20%. Most patients (63.8%) werernbelow the age of 20, with mean age of presentation of 20 years and SD ofrn10 years. The mean duration of presentation was less than three monthsrn(45.7%). The commonest subtype of functional neurological symptomrndisorder was found to be attack or seizure (68.6%). The commonestrnpsychiatric comorbidities were found to be mood spectrum disorders.rnSignificant association was seen between age younger 20 years, femalerngender and urban area of residency and diagnosis of FNSD. rn rnConclusion: The sociodemographic characteristics results from ourrnstudy are comparable to other studies form a similar setup, and so are the rnclinical characteristics.
