The purpose of this study is to assess the human resource management practices of Addis AbabarnUniversity with particular reference to administrative staff. It covered employee performancernappraisal, training and promotion practices of the university. The study adopted a mixed researchrnapproach and made use of both primary and secondary data. The primary data was collected from thernconcerned university officials through semi-structured interviews and from 129 administrative staffrnmembers selected from four colleges and the central administration through questionnaire survey. Arnsimple random sampling was used to select respondents from the four colleges, while employeesrnfrom the central administration were purposely included in the sample. The data gathered throughrnquestionnaire survey, mainly using 5-point Likert scale items, were analyzed using statisticalrntechniques (such as frequency distribution, mean rank and Chi-square test), the results of the analysesrnwere presented using tables, and the findings were interpreted and discussed using qualitativernnarrations. The findings of the study indicated that there is no sound performance appraisal systemrnfor administrative staff in the university, the process of employee training was found to bernunsystematic and employee promotion process of the university was also not adequately fair andrnobjective. Hence, it has been recommended that the university should improve its human resourcernmanagement system and practices (i.e. performance appraisal, training and promotion) in order tornensure the availability of efficient and effective administrative staff in all colleges and institutes
