Assessing Communication On Sexual And Reproductive Health Issues Among High School Students With Their Parents Bullen Woreda Benishangul Gumuz Region North West Ethiopia
A cross-sectional survey through self-administer questionnaires and FGD wasrnconducted from December 2005 to May 2006 at Bullen preparatory and highrnschools to assess communication on SRH issues among school students andrntheir parents. A total of 412 adolescents participated in the study. Of these,rn284(68.9%) were males and 128(31.1%) were females. Furthermore, aboutrn13.3% of the respondents were sexually active. School was mentioned as thernmost common source of information for sexual and reproductive health. Morernmales approved premarital sex than females (OR=2.7, 95%CI, 1.2-6.6)rnHowever, it turns insignificant when adjusted for other variables. WhereasrnGrade had no association with attitude towards premarital sex (OR=1.1, 95%CIrn0.5-2.6). Three hundred sixty two (87.9%) of the respondents reported that it isrnimportant to discuss sexual and reproductive health with parents. One hundredrnnineteen (28.9%) of the students discussed with either of their parents in at leastrntwo topics of SRH. Nevertheless, most of the respondents preferred to discussrnSRH issue with their peers/friends than their parents. In addition, there werernlow communication between adolescents and their parents on SRH issues. Bothrnmales and females were more comfortable to discuss sexual and reproductivernhealth issues with similar sex and siblings. Hence, based on the findingsrnobtained it is recommended that comprehensive family life education (FLE)rnviiirnshould be initiated for the students and parents in school, home, churches,rnmosques, and health facilities for effective communication on SRH.rnKey words: school students, parent, communication, sexuality
