Back ground: Contraceptive use including short and long acting and permanent methods are recorded tornhelp families to space and limit their size to their economic capacity. Wider access and use of long-actingrnand permanent methods of contraception are the most effective contraceptives available to contribute tornreduction of high levels of population growth and maternal mortality and morbidity. Yet, utilization ofrnLAPMs in Ethiopian is recorded to be low.rnObjective: The purpose of this study is to describe utilization of long acting and permanent familyrnplanning methods and identify associated factors among women of 18-49 years age group in Debre BirhanrnTown, North Shewa Zone, Amhara Region.rnMethods: A community based cross sectional study supported with qualitative method was conducted inrnfour selected Kebeles of Debre Birhan town. Systematic random sampling method was used to selectrnstudy subjects for the survey while purposive sampling was used to select study subjects for qualitativernstudy. A pre-tested structured questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data and interviewer topicrnguide was used for qualitative. The survey data was entered in to Epi, Info version 3.5.4 and exported,rncleaned and analyzed using SPSS version 21. Open code version 3.6.2 was used to categorize and codernqualitative data. Factors associated with utilization of LAPMs were identified using logistic regressionrnmodel and content analysis of qualitative data.rnResults: Current utilization of LAPMs among women of reproductive age was found to be 27.3%. Thosernwomen, who are aware of LAPMs, have positive attitude about LAPMs and those who were satisfied withrnthe service were found to be used LAPMs AOR=4.21, 95%CI 1.53-11.55, AOR=1.81, 95%CI 1.12-2.94rnand AOR=1.86, 95%CI: 1.14-3.04 respectively. Myths and misconceptions about utilization of IUCD andrnimplants were major barriers to the use of LAPMs.rnConclusion: Awareness, positive attitude and satisfaction with LAPMs were factors promoting use ofrnLAPMs, whereas myth and misconception in the community hinders the utilization of LAPMs. Therefore;rnsustained and appropriate information on LAPMs should be provided to raise awareness of women and therncommunity. The Town health office should design educational programs that promote and reduce barriersrnto LAPMs at community level in the Town
