The feasibility, reliability, and acceptance of the Amharicrnversion of the CIDI (Composite International Diagnostic Interview)rnwas tested in Addis Ababa city using clinician and non clinicianrninterviewers. In the first part of the study total of 64 subjectsrnfrom three different sources (community, psychiatric inpatient andrnoutpatient) were interviewed. The CIDI was judged to bernacceptable by most clinician and non clinician interviewers. Thernfew concerns about it include, the length of the interview andrndifficulties with a few of the items. For specific diagnoses madernwith frequency of five or more time, percent agreement and kapparnranged from 92.5%-100% and 0.78-0.92, respectively. The secondrnpart of the study determined the life time prevalence of specificrnDSM-III-R disorders using the Amharic CIDI modified after thernreliability study, 502 community subjects selected from Aradarndistrict by systematic random sampling were interviewed. The mostrnfrequent specific diagnoses found were; Organic brain syndromernmil,d (14.1%), severe (4.4%), Agoraphobia without history of panicrndisorder (3.0%) and dysthymia (3.0%). The very high rate foundrnfor organic brain syndrome, compared to other studies, made thernreliability of the eIDI for that diagnoses questionable. It isrnconcluded that the Amharic version of eIDI is reliable, rnacceptable, and feasible for use in the country. Thus similarrnstudies using CIOI with a better designs are recommended.
