This research was conducted to find out what are the major causes and types of conflict resolution mechanisms that are used by college students of Addis Ababa university. The study was conducted in the College of Business and Economics in Sidist killo campus. The researcher administered quantitative data collection using Thomas Kilmann’s conflict model instrument and a focus group discussion to triangulate the findings. The data was collected from 318 students who participated in the structured questionnaire and a five-question questionnaire for the focus group discussion. The researcher foun out that he major causes of conflict among students of the college were biased ethnic background, stereotyping and group mentality to get in to conflict. Individual conflicts are also associated with scarcity of resources and perceived injustice for certain individuals that are in the college. Out of the five conflict resolution mechanisms three were most preferred by the students. These are the Accommodating, Collaborating and Compromising conflict resolution mechanisms. It is also consistent with findings from the focus group discussion that most of mechanisms implemented are culturally nurtures mechanisms such as to accommodate others and coming together for a solution, even if it is meant to compromise one’s output. It is recommended that the college students to be provided with a platform for discussion and to explore and get updated information as well as a proactive admiration that conducts a regular assessment of student’s situation, that would greatly benefit the college to resolve conflicts before it actually escalated to a higher level.
