Refractive errors affect the normal functioning of the eyes. Its early identification is essential forrntaking corrective actions. Uncorrected refractive errors are “quality of life threatening†byrnnegatively affecting social adjustment and academic achievement. This research entitled “Socialrnand Academic Impacts of Refractive Error in Abado Primary School, Addis Ababa†wasrnconducted to assess the educational achievement and social experiences of students withrnrefractive error. A descriptive cross sectional study using qualitative and quantitative methodsrnwas used to obtain data by interviewing students and teachers and reviewing student academicrnrecords. The study involved 1643 students in 21 sections where 84 students were found to havernrefractive errors. Respondents social interaction, parents’ assistance on educational achievement,rnand teachers, facility support had mean scores of (M=2.84; SD=0.30), (M=2.56; SD=0.39), andrn(M=2.90; SD=0.63); respectively. The mean of average class results in 2009 and 2010 for thesernstudents was 67.26 with SD (10.60) and 68.59 with SD (10.70); respectively. Social interaction,rnparent assistance and facility support there was significant difference on education achievementrnF (3, 80) =7.57, p =0.00). Students were neutral for their social interaction, parent assistance onrneducation achievement and facility support. The student average class results lies underrnsatisfactory level. The majority of respondents were not screened their eyes before though theyrnhad problems. Diagnosed and eye glasses offered students didn’t wearing their spectacles.Therernis gap concerning the level of awareness and the efforts to overcome the problems. Affectedrnstudents are neutral in their response towards socialization that might be due to thernasymptomatic nature of the problem. Thus, conduct a comprehensive research on the level of thernproblem at national level.
