Regional Effects On The Academic Performance Of Freshman Students In The Faculty Of Science

The purpose of this study is to conduct an empirical investigation on academicrnperformance of freshman students of the Faculty of Science , AAU. A randomrnsample of 772 students have been selected from those students who have beenrnenrolled in the Faculty in academic years 1995/96, 1996/97,1997/98 andrn1999/2000. The students have beell.9rouped into two 51rala; Addis_ Ababa _andrnout-of-Addis Ababa region. Non-parametric Statistical methods such as Wilcoxonrnand Ansari-Bradley two sample tests, Lepage test and Spearman coefficient ofrncorrelation based on ranks were used to analyse the data. The results revealedrnthat at a 0.01 degree of assurance there is no significant difference in performancernbetween the two groups students at freshman level. The resu lts of the analysisrnalso showed that there is a significant correlation between ESLCE GPA andrnfreshman GPA.
