Ethiopia is one of the sub-Saharan African countries with alarming population growth ratern(2.6%) and high total fertility rate. To reduce high population growth and high fertility inrnEthiopia, the contraceptive use status of women needs to be increased. The main objective of thisrnstudy was to examine the determinants of contraceptive use and to examine how socio-economic,rndemographic and other proximate factors measured at different levels of a multilevel structurernaffect contraceptive use. The EDHS 2011 data have a two-level hierarchical structure, withrn9,324 married women nested within eleven regions. The ordinary logistic regression andrnmultilevel logistic regression model analysis were used to identify determinants of contraceptivernuse. The results of the ordinary logistic regression revealed that place of residence, womanrneducation level, age group, religion, exposure to mass media, visited by family planning workers, rndesire for more children, knowledge about family planning methods, education of partners andrnboth occupation of women and their husbands/partners were important determinants ofrncontraceptive use. Multilevel logistic regression analysis was employed to examine regionalrnvariations. The random intercept model revealed that there was a significant variation inrncontraceptives use across regions. The results of random intercept with fixed slope modelrnshowed that contraceptive use in Affar and Somali regions were below the average for allrnregions while Addis Ababa and Amhara have better performance than the average. The Randomrncoefficient model was used to investigate whether individual level covariates vary acrossrnregions. The results showed that contraceptive use varied across regions, and regional levelrnrandom effects of mass media exposure (radio, TV and newspapers) and religion were found tornbe significant in explaining variations for contraceptive use across regions of Ethiopia. As arnresult special attention needs to be paid, in particular, to the regions while formulating familyrnplanning policies in Ethiopia, for better success rate of family planning intervention programs
