The purpose of this study was to investigate perceptions and practices ofrnactive learning, to assess how the perceptions of instructors and studentsrninfluence their practices of active learning and to identify factors affectingrnthe implementation of active learning. To conduct the study, qualitativernmethod was employed. The study was conducted in Dilla University andrnthe data were collected from 60 students and 8instructors of the Universityrn.In the selection of the sample population purposive and systematicrnsampling were used. The main instrument of data collection was. The datarnwere analyzed using percentage, mean and grand mean. The findings ofrnthe study revealed that the main implementers of active learningrn(instructors and students) have perceived active learning positively. Inrnspite of their good perceptions, their practices of active learning were lowrn.Among the factors affecting the effective implementation of active learning;rninstructors’ and students’ tendency to traditional/lecture method, lack ofrnstudents interest, shortage of time, lack of instructional material and largernclass size were the major ones. Finally, recommendations were forwardedrnbased on the major findings so as to minimize problems encountered andrnmaximize the implementation of active learning.
