with an overall objective of identifying the information needsrnand problems of the public manufacturing sub-sector andrnproposing recommendations for the development of the nationalrnindustrial information systems and services, a questionnairernsurvey was made on 34 enterprises and their employees and arntotal of 159 completed questionnaire were collected andrnanalyzed. Assessments were made on the general features of thernmanufacturing sector, industrial techn~logy transfer and R&Drn~rnactivities, and the existing industrial information sources,rnsystems and services based on the literature on the subjectsrnand interviews.rnMost of the enterprises (91%) do not have any organisedrninformation unit nor do they have concrete plans andrnprogrammes to establish such a unit in the near future. Butrnthe majority of the respondents (81%) believe their firmsrnneed their own information units and they think the majorrnfactor for the absence such units in the enterprises was lackrnof management awareness than shortage of the requiredrnresources. The major areas of information need werernproduction, technical and marketing in that sequence.rnThough the enterprises were depending on various externalrninformation sources for the needed information, the dependence on library/information centres is very low compared to otherrnsources mainly because neither the collection of theirrninformation centres nor their services could meet theirrnrequirements.rnIn order to address the identified problems and needs, and tornimprove the industrial information systems and services,rnmeasures needed to be taken at the levels of the Ministry ofrnIndustry, industry- groups and enterprises are suggested~rn-
