The Government of Ethiopia started to introduce Business ProcessrnReengineering in some federal institution in 2004 and this was latterrnexpanded to all federal and state level offices. As such, this study wasrnconducted to assess the status of BPR implementation in the waredarneducation offices of Borena Zone by examining the existing BPR relatedrnawareness and attitude of education office workers and clientsrntowards the design, BPR implementation practices, existingrnimplementation monitoring and' valuation mechanism and thernchallenges impeding the implementation of BPR in the offices. ArnDescriptive survey method and qualitative and quantitative researchrnapproach were used to collect and analyze the data. Instruments suchrnas questionnaire, interview, document analyses and observatioll werernused to gather data. Availability sampling technique was used to selectrn5 wareda education office heads, 10 process owners,34 case workers, ,rn5 PTA chairmen, purposive sampling technique to select 5 CSGGOHsrnand 5 school directors'; lottery system to sample 20 teachers andrnaccidental sampling method to select 5 other stakeholders (investors).rnQuantitative data obtained from the questionnaire was analyzed byrnusing mean and percentage and data from interview, documentrnanalysis and observation qualitatively analyzed to complement thernquantitative one. The study concludes that even if large majority ofrnworkers have positive attitude towards BPR, the implementation statusrnof BPR in woreda education offices of Borena Zone is low due to: weakrnteam sprit emanated from variability in awareness of the workers, poorrncommunication net work, over focus on its hardware, weak monitoringrnand evaluation, lack of motivation and reward, inadequate training andrneducation, poor commitment of the leadership and problem related torncreating culture of change. To alleviate this, it is worth recommendingrnthat availing a system of offering regular research based training,rns tretching open, honest, and clear communication Ildwork,rnstrengthening monitoring and evaluation, establis h.ing reliablernperformance measurement system as well as reward and sanction andrnimproving commitment of leaders by evaluating them based on theirrnlevel of p erfonnance in implementing BPR.
