The main objective of this study was to assess current trends and issues related to the practicesrninvolved in the provision of in-service training programs of technical and vocational teachers inrnEthiopia. II was also designed to provide a basis for making suggestions and recommendationsrnfor improving the effectiveness, efficiency, and quality of in-service training programs of TVETteachers.rnThe study particularly focused on addressing basic issues related to the practices usedrnin the designing and implementation aspects of the programs. A descriptive survey method wasrnemployed for the study. Two hundred and twenty-five technical and vocational teachers werernrandomly selected from 9 TVET-colleges found in Tigray, Amhara, Oromiya, and Addis Ababarnadministrative areas to be the sample of the study. Fifty incidentally available leaders in TVETsrnat federal, regional and college levels were also included to be the subject of the study.rnQuestionnaire and analysis of documents were used to collect information for the study. Twornhundred seventy-five questionnaires were distributed and the return rate was 76.59% and 66%rnfor teacher and leader respondents respectively. The collected data were coded and analyzedrnusing SPSS computer program. Both descriptive and inferential statistics, including frequencies,rnpercentages, means, standard deviations, and One-way ANOVA and independent sample t-testrnwere used to analyze the data. The major findings were that in-service training of TVETteachersrn1) highly lacks policy requirements and 2) failed to address both the organization andrnindividual training needs. The main recommendations were 1) TVET-colleges need to strengthenrntheir relation with industries and service providers; 2) TVET-colleges need to take morerninitiatives to provide in-college trainings; and 3) Training needs should be thoroughly assessed.
