Of all playwrights in the English-speaking world, thernmost translated into Amharic is Wil l iam Shakespeare. At leastrnten of his plays have appeared either in .print or on stage, orrnboth, since 1933 E. C. · Among these ten, the tragedy of JuliusrnCaesar has been translated four times by four differentrntranslators - most likely due to its thematic relevance . Therncritical analysis in this thesis discloses that successfulrnwork has not been achieved in two of the target texts . Quiternthe opposite holds t r ue in the other two.rnDespite Shakespeare's early introduction to Ethiopia ,rnnot much study or research ias been done on him. This thesisrnattempts to examine the difficulties involved in translationrnwork in general, and , in translation of Shakespeare inrnparti cular , by focusing on Julius Caesar . It is hoped that itrnwill pave the way for future researchers t o follow suite andrnshed light on the bard in the Ethiopian cont ext.rn* All years are given in Gregorian Calender unless otherwisernexplained as in this case .
