EFFECTS OF NON-AVAILABILITY OF INSTRUCTIONAL FACILITIES IN DEVELOPMENT OF SECRETARIAL STUDIES
(A CASE STUDY OF I.M.T. ENUGU)
ABSTRACT
This research work was carried out to survey the effects of non-availability of instructional facilities in the department of secretarial studies in institute of management and technology.
It was discovered that availability of facilities exist in the department and the equipment used in the department are electronic typewriter, computer, word processor, shreading Machine to train modern secretaries today.
Low performance of student’s secretaries was associated with non-availability of instructional facilities and it would be better if they are provided with the needed facilities as they desire more practiced training to theoretically oriented training.
Lack of funds was also noted as responsible for lack of equipment and as such government assistance as well as external assistance is needed for the procurement of the facilities.
Student’s payment of equipment/levy was also a way of solving the problem.
It was concluded that the need for instructional facilities is widely recognized in the department of secretarial studies, as the necessary facilities for effective instruction are grossly inadequate.
In recommendations, it was recommended that the school management should see to the provision of instructional facilities in the department as this will enhance proficiency.
Accommodation should also be provided as this will add to life span of the existing machines.

1.1 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
With what the present day secretaries are and what we have about technology, it is pertinent for us to emulate the ways of Europeans; there were records and records keeping of events that took place with the period. In West Africa, different services rendered by secretaries exist which could be classified as ancient and modern. Some places even used oral record before the arrival of the missionaries, but when the missionaries came, things changed.
Moreover, in 1842 when the white man arrived and established schools, church as and small scale business for the successful accomplishment of their mission and evangelism. The genesis of the modern secretary was established. A secretary is an indispensable asset to any organization or establishment. Their importance and sensitive position can never be overemphasized. They play major roles in both private and government establishment.
Most of these secretaries were trained in different tertiary institutions of learning in Nigeria especially in polytechnics. The history of the polytechnics in training secretaries has assumed greater roles in recent time considering the special nature of secretarial course, peculiar instrument or equipment normally
